The department was established in 1963 by Professor Antal LÁSZLÓ awarded with Kossuth-Prize, separating it from the Chemical Engineering Science Workgroup of the Physical Chemical Department. The fundamental aim was at the beginning to introduce the theory of unit operation into the traditional chemical engineering training. Later mathematical modelling of unit operation became high-lighted. Chemical process dynamics was first investigated in Hungary at the department focusing on the possibilities of automatic control of unit operations. For this purpose a new course, a special training was introduced within the frame of the Chemical Industrial Process Control Discipline existed from 1967 to 1977.
Professor Pál SZOLCSÁNYI was appointed to the Head of Department in 1976. Under his leadership was widened the profile of education and research with surface science investigation, especially in the field of fluid-solid and solid-gas phase contacting. This time the engineering application of transport processes and irreversible thermodynamics were high-lighted in the education. In 1977 the former Autonomous Departmental Group of Chemical Industrial Cybernetics (later Department of Chemical Engineering Cybernetics) was separated from the department, thus the profile of department got narrower with the subject of mathematical modelling.
In 1989 Associated Professor Gyula MARTON, later University Professor was nominated the Head of the Department. A new course, the Unit Operation for Fine Chemistry discipline was introduced in 1990, providing training on theory and practice of special and high purity material production. The great development in biotechnology research during the years initiated the integration of biotechnology into the educational courses. This time chemical engineering education was accredited by IChemE.
Since 1997 the department has been headed by Associated Professor Géza HORVÁTH. His main aim is to modernize the quality and quantity of equipment supply at the department with the help of external resources to be able long term to meet the requirements of IChemE. The department as a member of the Institute of Chemical and Process Engineering is responsible for the chemical engineering education, and keeps tight connection to other fields of education (energetics, environmental protection, quality management, informatics) as well.
